ECB Issues Updated Safety Guidance for Junior Cricket

Parley Cricket Club would like to draw members’ attention to the latest safety recommendations released by the ECB regarding junior training sessions.

One of the key updates concerns the use of ball throwers and sidearm devices. The ECB has advised that these should not be used in junior cricket unless operated by appropriately trained coaches and should not be used by under 18’s. In line with this, Parley CC asks parents and guardians to avoid placing  sidearms/ball throwers in junior players’ kit bags and to refrain from using them during club training.

In addition bowling machines should only be operated by adults who are suitably experienced, competent and familiar with their safe operation. All Parley coaches hold ECB qualifications and have received the necessary instruction in the safe operation of bowling machines and net safety protocols.

ECB Helmet Guidance

The ECB has also introduced new recommendations on the use of neck and stem guards - protective attachments designed to shield the neck and upper spine when batting. These guards are widely available from reputable cricket retailers, and Parley CC strongly encourages all players to ensure their helmets are fitted with one. Anyone purchasing a new helmet is urged to choose one that includes a stem guard, while existing helmets should have a neckguard fitted. The club recommends that these guards are worn during every hardball session and match.

A reminder that all players under the age of 18 must wear a helmet when batting or wicketkeeping. Helmets must meet the BS7928:2013 safety standard (or a more recent equivalent). Parents are encouraged to check current equipment to ensure it complies with these requirements.

If any parents or guardians have questions about the new guidance or would like advice on equipment, they are warmly encouraged to speak with one of the club’s coaches, who will be happy to help.
